Ivan Chuikov (Иван Чуйков, 1935–2020) was a leading figure of Moscow Conceptualism and a member of the “Sretensky Boulevard” group. The son of the Socialist Realist painter Semyon Chuikov, he trained at the Surikov Art Institute (1954–60) and spent his career questioning the mechanics of perception and illusion.
The Window
From 1967 Chuikov developed his “Window” series — more than eighty works over decades — using the window as a device to examine how images frame and fake reality. The critic Boris Groys credited Chuikov’s work as an inspiration for the term “Moscow Romantic Conceptualism.”
Later series and collections
Later cycles include “Fragments of the Interior” (1995) and “Fragments of Newspapers” (1996). His work is held by the Tretyakov Gallery, the Centre Pompidou, the Ludwig Forum Aachen, the Zimmerli Art Museum and the State Russian Museum. He lived in Düsseldorf from 2006 until his death in 2020.
