Dmitri Gutov: Marxist Aesthetics in Art

Dmitri Gutov (Дмитрий Гутов, born 1960, Moscow) is a Russian artist working across painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation, and a theorist of Marxist aesthetics in the tradition of the Soviet philosopher Mikhail Lifshitz. In 1994 he founded the Lifshitz Institute in Moscow.

Between theory and object

Gutov graduated in 1992 from the History and Theory of Fine Arts department of the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg, with a thesis on Malevich and Florensky. His work has appeared in the Venice Biennale (1995, 2007, 2011), documenta in Kassel (2007), the São Paulo and Sydney biennials, and the Moscow Biennale.

Collections

His work is held by the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Daimler Collection in Berlin.
