Nikolai Kasatkin (Николай Касаткин, 1932–2019) was a Russian painter of the “sixties generation” associated with the Moscow unofficial art scene. A 1959 graduate of the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute, he joined the Moscow Artists’ Union in 1973 and worked in close company with Erik Bulatov and Oleg Vassiliev.
Toward a conceptual landscape
Kasatkin’s painting moved from early post-Cézannist experiments through object-combined works to what has been described as a “conceptual landscape.” The State Tretyakov Gallery gave him the retrospective “Double Picture / Reality” in 2015.

His work is held by the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Pushkin Museum, among other Russian collections.
Note: this is the contemporary painter Nikolai Kasatkin (1932–2019), not the earlier Peredvizhniki artist Nikolay Kasatkin (1859–1930).
