Olga Tobreluts: Neo-Academism and Digital Art

Olga Tobreluts (Ольга Тобрелутс, born 1970) is a pioneer of digital art in Russia and a central figure of St. Petersburg Neo-Academism, the “New Academy” circle led by Timur Novikov that she joined in 1994. She works in new media, digital and video art, photography, painting and sculpture.

Classical form, digital means

Trained in architecture in Leningrad and at the ART+COM Institute in Berlin (1991–93), Tobreluts recasts classical and mythological subjects through digital technique. Her works include the video Woe from Wit (1993), the installation Third Reality (1995), and the “New Mythology” series.

Recognition and collections

She was elected an Honorary Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts in 2016 and received the Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award in 2021. Her work is held by the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
