Nadezhda Elkonina-Rozenberg (1910–1980) was a Soviet painter born in Feodosiia. Her practice encompassed painting, graphics and monumental work, including murals and mosaics. She lived and worked in Moscow and took part in exhibitions in Moscow and across the Soviet Union.

How did Elkonina-Rozenberg train and work?

Elkonina-Rozenberg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1925–1926, then entered the monumental department of the painting faculty at VKhUTEIN in 1927. She left her studies in 1930 following the institution’s reorganisation.

From 1930 she belonged to the art society Four Arts. Her work crossed several formats: alongside paintings and graphic works, she contributed to monumental decoration and made painted and mosaic panels with her husband, V. B. Elkonin.

What monumental work did she undertake?

In the 1940s, Elkonina-Rozenberg worked with L. A. Bruni on the ceiling painting at the Central Theatre of the Red Army. The decoration included landscapes of the central Russian region. In 1948, she and Elkonin made a panel for the club of the S. M. Budyonny factory to mark the 800th anniversary of Moscow.

Where was her work exhibited and collected?

Her work appeared in the 1931 Exhibition of Art of the 1920s–1930s and the 1962 exhibition marking 30 years of the Moscow Union of Artists. She also held joint personal exhibitions with Elkonin in 1970 and 1975. A memorial exhibition followed in 1982.
