How did Kafanov’s early career take shape?
Kafanov was born in Moscow. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography. After his art studies, he began working as a graphic artist and illustrator; he later made four short cartoons at the Soyuzmultfilm studio.
From 1970 to 1972, he served in the Soviet Armed Forces in the Soviet Far East, including the Kuril Islands. In 1990 he emigrated to the United States. His first American exhibition took place in San Francisco that summer.
What forms and motifs define his art?
Kafanov’s practice has moved between traditional oil painting on canvas or wood and work in other media. He has also used ceramics, printmaking, welding and sculpture. His later paintings include recurring images of large fish in unusual surroundings, sometimes with small architectural structures placed on them.
In more recent work described in his biography, he has used a rapidograph and black Japanese ink on acrylic. The palette can include bright primary colours, with yellow backgrounds and strong red and green. Across these changes in method, his art explores the depth of life in varied forms.
Where has his work appeared?
Kafanov’s paintings have been shown in galleries and at auctions, and his work has reached audiences through printed and recorded music. He worked as an illustrator for The New York Times. His images have also featured on book and album covers, including projects connected with The Smashing Pumpkins and mewithoutYou.
For The Smashing Pumpkins, he created the cover for the 2000 release Machina. His related cover work also includes the band’s singles “I of the Mourning,” “Stand Inside Your Love” and “Try, Try, Try.” He contributed artwork to all full-length albums by mewithoutYou, as well as to Canadian singer-songwriter Jonny Craig’s 2009 debut album, A Dream Is a Question You Don’t Know How to Answer.
What is known about his artistic influences?
Kafanov has drawn inspiration from the work of Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Mikhail Shemyakin and Giorgio Morandi. Franco Zeffirelli also influenced him: Zeffirelli encountered Kafanov’s work during a visit to his studio in the late 1980s and praised his painting.
These connections offer points of reference for understanding Kafanov’s work, but the available biographical facts do not place him within a named Soviet art movement or group. His career is marked instead by a range of media, migration from the Soviet Union to the United States, and a sustained presence in illustration and music-related imagery.
